You might have read the Harvard Business Review article The One Number You Need to Grow, by Frederick F. Reichheld.

In summary, he reviewed many customer satisfaction surveys to determine if there is a correlation between the questions and the actual growth of a business. Surprisingly he found a single question that was true for most businesses.

The question is "Would your recommend us to your friends and colleagues?" using a scale of from 0 to 10. Those that answered 9 and 10 were "promoters" those that answered 0 to 6 were "detractors". By subtracting the detractors from the promoters he created what he called the "net promoters score".
